The Food Allergy and Intolerance Specialist Group (FAISG) of the British Dietitic Association (BDA) was formed in 2002.Its Chair Ms Isabel Skypala is a member of the BSACI Council. The group has over 80 members which and holds meetings twice year, the AGM is usually held during the BSACI conference in July. All members of the group are involved in the field of allergy, in addition to giving dietary advice to patients, members also play an active role in diagnosis, with 54% involved in or performing skin prick testing and 33% undertaking food challenges.

FAISG has some very experienced and dedicated dieticians on the committee and over the years the group have made significant progress with regards to sharing resources and putting together position statements on the management of infants at risk of developing food allergy. Members debate issues with regards to food allergy using an email network. The group share information with medical, nursing and other clinical colleagues in the hope it will improve care for many and lead to joint position papers or agreed care protocols.

The group established a food allergy module as part of the MSc in Allergy at Southampton, which ran for the first time in Southampton in April 2004 and is open to dieticians as an ongoing stand alone module. Overall the aim is to maximize multi –disciplinary training opportunities, so all can share and learn from best practice. The group would like to encourage communication with others in order to strenghthen links and further their understanding of food hypersensitivity.
