A totally revised version of the BSACI guidelines for the management of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis is now available from the BSACI members only webpage or online from Blackwell Synergy.
The British Society for
Allergy and Clinical Immunology has prepared new guidelines for the
management of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis for practising physicians in
secondary care. Rhinosinusitis is common, affecting around 15% of the
population, can be difficult to treat and causes significant reduction in
quality of life.
Included in the guideline are: clinical classification of rhinosinusitis,
diagnosis, investigations, aetiology and treatment guidance with a section on
children. Guidance is also given for Nasal polyps, allergic fungal
rhinosinusitis, fungal rhinosinusitis, aspirin-sensitive nasal polyposis and
Churg-Strauss syndrome. The guideline is based on evidence, as well as expert
opinion and the recommendations are evidence graded.
Dr Shuaib Nasser, Chair of the BSACI, Standards of Care Committee and
responsible for the preparation of the guideline said, “The
guideline for the management of rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis is for the
benefit of adult physicians and paediatricians practising allergy and should
also be invaluable for ENT surgeons.” This is a new guideline on rhinosinusitis
and nasal polyposis produced by the BSACI Standards of Care Committee in consultation
with BSACI membersand complements
the rhinitis management guideline published
in the January issue of the Journal, Clinical
and Experimental Allergy.
The guideline has been published in the February, 2008 issue of Clinical and Experimental Allergy, 38:2, 260-275.
Authors: GK Scadding; SR Durham; R Mirakian; NS Jones; AB Drake-Lee; D Ryan; TA Dixon; PAJ Huber and SM Nasser.
All BSACI guidelines can be accessed from the members only webpages under 'guidelines'.
