New study: Peanut desensitisation

Researchers at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge today announced the start of a new trial of oral immunotherapy for children with peanut allergy.

The study, funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) will see if introducing tiny amounts of peanut into the diets of allergic children can induce tolerance over time.

One hundred children with peanut allergy have been invited to take part  in this study which will take three years to complete.

Warning: These trials were carried out by allergy specialists. Please do not try this at home.

This new announcement builds upon a previous smaller study by the same group where 21 children underwent peanut immunotherapy with the result that they can all now eat five peanuts a day without reacting.

Families who participated in this trial say that there lives have been changed by the experience.

The researchers caution however that this treatment is still under development and it should not be attempted at home or in a clinical setting until results of  larger studies are available.
