Vaccines and Food Allergy

Key Messages

  • There are few vaccine contraindications in individuals with food allergies
  • Individuals with an egg allergy can have the MMR in primary care
  • Vaccines containing significant quantities of egg are those prepared on embryonated chicken eggs (influenza, yellow fever and rabies)
  • Appropriate risk analyses should be undertaken in those individuals with gelatin or latex allergies and in those individuals who have previously experienced an immediate hypersensitivity reaction to a specific vaccine.

The vast majority of individuals with food allergies can safely have their vaccinations in primary care.
