Immunotherapy - BSACI

Immunotherapy

Key Messages

  • Food immunotherapy is increasingly practiced within the UK but at present is generally only available in private practice or within research trials
  • The objective of food immunotherapy is to raise the threshold of an allergic individual to inadvertent exposure. This requires regular oral ingestion or epicutaneous application
  • Immunotherapy is not without considerable risks and should only be undertaken under the supervision of experienced allergists in specialist centres
  • Although commercial peanut immunotherapy is licenced in the EU, it is not NICE approved at present
