Recommendations on plant-based drinks for children aged 1 year and over

The BSACI is releasing a joint guidance statement endorsed by the British Dental Association and the Food Allergy Specialist Group of the British Dietetic Association. This outlines current national recommendation and offers guidance on most preferred versus least preferred alternatives on nutritional grounds.

Not all milk substitutes are equal.

Infants and toddlers may be weaned onto milk substitutes for a number of reasons, including family dietary preferences, intolerance or, for the minority because of diagnosed milk allergy.

Plant based alternatives differ in their nutritional qualities, with variable calcium and vitamin fortification and often high levels of sugars exceeding recommended daily intake.
