The purified chick embryo cell rabies vaccine (PCEC; Rubipur®) contains residues of chicken proteins such as ovalbumin so an alternative rabies vaccine may be considered for pre-immunisation in those with a severe egg allergy. However, there are no contraindications to post-exposure treatment with the rabies vaccine in those with an egg allergy. This includes those with a severe egg allergy who can receive the PCEC vaccine (Rubipur®).
